Bret Petersen

Bret Petersen is a Patent Attorney at NovoTech Patent Firm and is based in the Midwest.

Bret has drafted and prosecuted patents in many areas of electronics including integrated circuit fabrication processes, low dielectric interconnect structures, memory capacitor structures, transistor structures, calculators, disk drive driver circuits and various analog and digital circuits. Bret also has experience in drafting and prosecuting computer software patents in a number of areas including networking, work load management, hypervisors, operating system software, virtual machine deployment, cloud computing and mobile phone communications. Bret has also prepared software patents for database query optimization, database journal optimization and database processing.

Bret’s previous legal experience includes working at a small firm prosecuting patents, drafting appeals, prosecuting trademarks and counseling clients in IP matters. Bret also served for 10 years as corporate patent counsel at Texas Instruments. While at Texas Instruments, Bret’s responsibilities included patent prosecution work, working with outside counsel, administering invention review committees that prioritized ideas for patents, assisting with foreign patent prosecution, and counseling business groups on intellectual property issue.

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Bret was a digital design engineer for Texas Instruments Inc. where he designed interfaces for test equipment and airborne computer systems.

Bret is admitted to practice in the state of Texas and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Babak Akhlaghi is an adjunct professor at University of Maryland, where he teaches legal aspects of entrepreneurship. Babak is also a registered patent attorney and the Managing Director at NovoTech Patent Firm, where he assists inventors in protecting and monetizing their inventions. He is also a co-author of the "Patent Applications Handbook," which has been updated and published annually by West Publications (Clark Boardman Division) since 1992. One of his distinguished accomplishments involves guiding a startup through the patent application process, which led to substantial licensing opportunities that significantly enhanced the company's strategic value.
